In early 1990 a group of young Dutch and Belgian entrepreneurs set the wheels in motion to promote gainful employment in Haiti, one of the poorest countries found in the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean.

A Haitian woman-owned company since 2006 and following the guiding principles of Fair Trade, Caribbean Craft works to both coordinate producers and export their products on a wholesale level.

Haitian artisans have gained a sense of dignity and empowerment by becoming wage earners, either independently or as in-workshop artists. Haiti is a center of artistic creativity and inventiveness, which is exemplified by the vibrant tradition and continuation of self-taught painting with colorful style and lines.

Caribbean Craft strives to find uses for recycled materials. The highly original and internationally renowned oil drum art is made from recycled steel drums. The steel is molded into ornate forms with artistic interpretation ranging from regional folklore to the religious symbolism of Voodoo.

Paper maché art objects are made using leftover cement bags and glue made from locally grown, renewable plants. Festive ornaments, piggy banks, serving trays remain some of its bestsellers.

Recycled plastic bottles become functional napkin holders with fanciful tropical designs that are popular for picnics and barbecues.

Recent political upheaval, excessive embargos on Haitian exports and economic uncertainty and even a devastating hurricane have compromised the effectiveness of Caribbean Craft. But the organization presses on, employing over 400 artisans, men and women, both as salaried employees and outside contractors.
