Do I really want silk flowers for my wedding bouquet?

Posted by Mary on 4/5/2011 to A Florist's Perspective

Maybe this is a question you are asking yourself.  And its a good question.  Of course we are naturally and instinctively attracted to fresh flowers with their delicate petals and heady aromas.  And if you tend to be a traditionalist, you will be inclined to want fresh flowers for your bridal bouquet.

But wait!  Dont make your decision too hastily.  Because todays silk flowers are made from such highly specialized materials that they look and feel stunningly life-like. The only person who will know that the flowers in your bouquet are not fresh is you.

Silk flower bouquets have some distinct advantages.  For one thing, they can be delivered days or even weeks ahead of time, leaving you with one less last minute logistic to worry about.  And for another thing, you can be confident that the flowers you hand out to your wedding party early in the day will still have the same fresh look at the end of the day.

But lets face it, neither of these advantages is convincing enough.  Thats because you should not make a decision about your wedding bouquet based solely on the fresh vs. silk debate.  More important than this is the design of the bouquet that you choose.  Dont even ask yourself, Do I want fresh or silk?  Ask yourself, What flowers, colors and design elements will form the perfect bouquet for the wedding I am envisioning for myself?

Yes, thats a more difficult question to answer than, Fresh or silk?  So watch for an upcoming blog where I will try to provide some guidance for how to get the most impact from your bouquet and still stay within your budget.

Hi, I'm considering silk myself for my business. I've just finished my floral basic design class where it deals w/just fresh flowers. It was a 9 mo course but I'm leaning toward silk. Its less expensive and easier to order. I live in a small town in Indiana and am going to open a shop out of my house and can't seem to come up with a name that me and my husband agree on. It's crazy! But I just want to tell you that I came across your site and your bouquets are so beautiful!

Thanks for the kind words Dawn. I'm glad to hear that your husband is involved in the business... as long as he knows who's Boss you shouldn't have any problems. I'm excited for you and wish you and your husband nothing but success and congratulations on the new business!
