Kahero Farm

The Great Rift Valley is a geologic phenomenon that divides Kenya neatly down the length of the country, basically separating east from west. The Valley as we know it today is characterized by steep volcanic mountains, uninhabitable desert and fertile farmland. About ten miles north of the Equator in the Valley one may find Kahero Farm.

Formerly a forest full of brown olive trees (olea Africana) that has long since been destroyed by the indigenous people of the region, the new owners salvaged the aged tree stumps as they prepared the land for crops and grazing then taught the local herdsman to carve bowls and spoons from the aged wood.

These local herdsmen now have an opportunity to supplement their income as they sit watching over the sheep and cattle in the fields. Using rudimentary handcrafted tools, machetes and chisels they chip away at the reclaimed olive wood until it becomes an attractive piece of functional art!
