In early 1990 a group of young multi-national entrepreneurs set the wheels in motion to promote gainful employment in Haiti, one of the poorest countries found in the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean. Unemployment is estimated between 60 and 80%! Following the guiding principles of Fair Trade, Caribbean Craft (formerly Drexco) searches out gifted but unskilled craftspeople and trains them in the art of sculpting fanciful folk art using recycled oil drums.
Recent political upheaval, excessive embargos on Haitian exports and economic uncertainty have compromised the effectiveness of Caribbean Craft. But the organization presses on, employing over 400 artisans, men and women, both as salaried employees and outside contractors. The Haitian community is a gracious and caring one, used to adversity and overflowing with natural artistic talents. We are sure you will find any of their artful pieces an inspiring addition to your home.
