Marty Stevens-Heebner is the founder and president of Half the Sky Designs, a fashion forward thinking company that is intent on making eco-friendly and human-friendly businesses the norm rather than simply a niche industry. And she is well on her way to success with her award winning line of Rebagz Eco-Chic Handbags and Manufacturing the Right Way which helps other entrepreneurs learn how to manufacture in a cost-effective way using the most environmental and socially responsible methods available.
Marty is an author, designer and entrepreneur. Resourceful and creative she looks at everything with fresh eyes and is inspired by the people and places she has traveled. She holds a degree in ancient history from Cornell University, spent time as a human rights worker in Chiapas, Mexico in the aftermath of the Zapatista rebellion and has traveled to every continent on Earth. With color and variety the feature of Marty’s designs it’s no wonder she found a match made in heaven when she happened upon a foundation that makes Rebagz for Half the Sky Designs!
Introduced in July 2007, Rebagz is a line of bright durable totes, packs, handbags and wallets made using colorful woven recycled juice packs, recycled nylon rice sack graphics, coated recycled paper and PET plastic. A few years ago, Marty set off to the Philippines, designs in hand, to find fabrics and people to make handbags in the traditional manner. Instead she found a dedicated and talented group of women weaving and sewing a variety of well-made accessories using recycled materials. The women were thrilled to learn about Marty’s design ideas and immediately began implementing them giving birth to a fresh eco-chic collection!
One dollar per bag goes to Global Exchange, a membership-based international human rights organization dedicated to promoting social, economic and environmental justice around the world. In 2009, Rebagz introduced a new collection of Statement Makers. Each style of Statement Makers handbags further benefits various causes.
