The Bartel Arts Trust (BAT) Shop is on a mission “to support the development of a vibrant artistic practice which celebrates our rich cultural diversity and builds respect for artists and their role within society.”
We would say MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Based in Durban, South Africa, the BAT Shop began its operations in 1995 with ten weavers from Siyanda. Today 400+ weavers from four communities across KwaZulu-Natal are making a sustainable income because of BAT shop training.
This urban-based community art center introduces disadvantaged and emergent artists to techniques, financial planning and product development, exposing them to international trends, cutting edge design and sources where they can purchase materials for their specialized craft.
The focus of the BAT Shop is on local arts, culture, crafts and entertainment that reflect the Zulu, Indian and Western heritage of KwaZulu-Natal. Its success stems from attention to every aspect of business development including staying ahead of market trends and catering to consumer tastes. This marketing strategy has enabled The BAT Shop to establish a large clientele in South Africa and break into the US market with crafts that appeal to fast-changing American styles.
