 ORGANIC
Organic implies food and other items derived from raw materials that are wild-crafted or organically grown. The processes used minimize damage to the environment and improve the quality of life for the workers and animals involved.
Following is an overview of the growing variety of organic materials being used in the clothing & fashion industries to assist us in making healthier choices for ourselves, our families, and the earth. Additionally, we have included a summary of the dye processes most widely used by eco-friendly manufacturers.
Natural color clothing is the healthiest and most eco-friendly. These include color-grown cottons (brown, blue, purple, green) and natural color wools and alpaca. No dyes are used and the fabric maintains a consistent color.
Clay-dyeing uses an age old technique of grinding minerals and irons found within earthen clay, blending with water then soaking natural color cotton to the desired hue. After several washings, a slight color change may be expected.
Low-impact fiber-reactive dyes remain the most widely used in the organic manufacturing industry because of their color diversity. The colors are bright, rich, and colorfast. Low-impact fiber-reactive dyes are considered an eco-friendly pigment because they contain no formaldehyde or heavy metals (ie. bright turquoise and bright yellow typically require heavy metals to achieve their brightness) and create less waste water runoff than modern dyeing methods. Seventy percent or more of the dye actually adheres to the fiber during the dye process. Waste water is filtered multiple times and is returned to the water system cleaner than it was originally. But, the actual dyes are almost always found to be made from synthetic petrochemicals. As the industry grows, however, one may anticipate development of a true non-toxic pigment to rival the low-impact dyes currently available.
Organic cotton, inherently soft to the touch, is grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides and possesses no chemical finishes. This growing method improves soil quality; supports biodiversity and our fragile ecosystems. Organically grown cotton yields are high and the chemical-free working environment promotes health and wellbeing.
Viscose fabric from Bamboo fiber is extremely durable which belies its luxurious delicate sheen and soft rayon-like drape. It has excellent insulating properties and is highly absorbent and breathable, wicking moisture away from the skin while keeping the wearer cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Bamboo, a highly renewable resource, is a fast growing grass, ready for harvest within 5 years. It is naturally resistant to pests making it relatively easy to grow without the use of chemicals.
EcoSpun is a polyester fiber made entirely from recycled plastic bottles! EcoSpun fleece is warm, durable, lightweight, weather resistant and soft to the touch. It is often blended with other fibers such as cotton, wool and Tencel for manufacture of clothing, blankets, carpeting, fiberfill and other home furnishings.
Woven hemp can be traced back 10,000 years making it one of the oldest textiles known to man. The fabric for the first flag of the United States of America was hemp, as were the covers for the wagons that dared to venture west, attesting to its strength and durability. It resists UV light and is mold resistant. Its texture is compared most closely to linen. For the record, industrial hemp has no drug value. Hemp is grown organically, needs no irrigation, is insect resistant and is harvested and processed without machinery. It produces up to 3 times more fiber per acre than cotton. Woven hemp is breathable and may be produced on its own as a fabric or combined with other fibers as a blend.
Ingeo fibers offer a viable sustainable solution to synthetics. As a fabric, Ingeo's luxurious feel contradicts its durability and easy maintenance. A derivative of fermented corn, an annually renewable resource, Ingeo fibers require about half of the energy needed in the production of synthetic polyester and release fifty percent fewer greenhouse gasses during the production process. From raw material through to the end product, the manufacture of Ingeo fibers integrates environmental responsibility with excellent product performance and comfort. This extraordinary product delivers comparable performance characteristics to the easy care synthetic polyester fibers we have come to love in a variety of clothing and home accessories.
Linen is derived from the flax plant, and like hemp, its use dates back thousands of years. Linen is absorbent and breathable which gives it excellent wicking qualities. Organically grown linen drapes beautifully and compliments many fabrics as a blend, giving eco-friendly designers yet another fabric to further verify that the new "green" is style, quality, and performance.
Soy fabric is made using a by-product of the process used to make tofu. Because of its high protein count, it is receptive to natural dyes, has an amazingly soft cashmere quality, is lightweight, breathable and super comfortable to wear. What more can we say?
Tencel is made from wood pulp cellulose. It offers a soft, silky hand, has super absorbency qualities, is as strong as any synthetic, enjoys the coolness of linen and is as warm as wool! The most naturally hygienic fiber, Tencel prevents the growth of bacteria. Through manipulation of the fibers during processing, a variety of looks from denim to suede can be accomplished.
Wool is considered organic when the wool is harvested without harm to its source. Guidelines to insure this include the prevention of overgrazing through limiting the number of animals per acre. No synthetic pesticides may be used on grazing lands, feed is organic, and antibiotic use is regulated. Raw and untreated, wool has scales that cause shrinkage and make it feel itchy and coarse to the hand. To improve these qualities, organic wool is slow-washed to reduce shrinkage and produce a wonderfully soft texture.

Recycled is the reusing of materials to make new products, saving our precious natural resources and raw materials. Recycling uses less energy, decreasing oil dependence; reduces landfill, curbing leaching of contaminants into the soil and water supply; and improves air quality through the reduction of toxic incinerator emissions. Each purchase of a recycled product promotes a growing industry that is vital to our economy from creation of jobs to consumer and corporate environmental awareness.

Sustainable manufacturers strive to produce products in an environment that provides social and economic benefits while practicing environmental stewardship. These companies pledge to protect public health, social & cultural welfare, and the environment over the full life cycle of the products, from the mining of raw materials to final disposition. Renewable and alternative energy is often used in the process. Consumers are beginning to see the personal value in their use of sustainable products and understand the effectiveness of their cumulative purchasing power. As the producers react to this shift to conscious consumerism, more environmentally preferable products will appear in the marketplace.
With that said sustainability has many definitions, each with its own essence. The Alliance for Sustainability has developed a widely used definition that is all encompassing: Sustainability is ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane (embodying our highest values in terms of how we treat people, animals and the earth).
Sustainable also often refers to renewable raw materials being used in place of traditional non-renewable resources. Examples include:
Bamboo is a grass that can grow to over one hundred feet. It grows in many climates from jungle floors to high mountain sides. Used primarily as an alternative to wood, bamboo is both decorative and useful. In many places it is used for food and construction material. On a consumer level, companies utilize the rare attributes of bamboo to manufacture furniture, useful kitchen tools, dinnerware, sporting goods, musical instruments, wind chimes, flooring and textiles.
FSC certified is a designation of a certification process that evaluates and identifies properly managed forests. FSC certified forest products support environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests. From raw materials in the forest through all successive stages of processing, manufacturing and distribution, the consumer is ensured appropriate handling with the FSC label.
Ingeo fibers, derived from fermented corn, deliver benefits from fibers to yarns and fabrics to products for the end user. One may expect the benefits of a natural fiber with the performance of a synthetic. Ingeo fibers are the first man-made product from 100% annually renewable resources. Uses include but are not limited to apparel, bedding, carpet, home accessories and personal care.
Hemp can be grown year round worldwide to maturity in less than one hundred days. Hemp is the perfect superfood source, with renowned healing and pain-relieving powers. Hemp seeds provide plenty of protein and are an excellent source of Omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids. Hemp seed oil is used as a moisturizing agent in cosmetics and personal care products. Already being used for the manufacture of paper, hemp offers a promising alternative to plastics and has potential to perform well in a myriad of other industrial uses.

Domestic Shipping Information
Organic Bug ships most items to addresses in the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, United States Territories and United States military installations. Merchandise may be shipped by a variety of carriers and shipping rates vary. We constantly compare shipping rates to provide you the best possible service for the fairest price. UPS and USPS are our primary shippers but organicbug.com may use alternate ground shipping methods for specialty shipping and oversized items.
Shipping & Handling fees are determined by the weight and destination of the parcel. Value is considered for insurance purposes only. Orders may be shipped in multiple boxes depending upon the size and weight of the order. Shipping rates may be viewed and shipping methods chosen during the check-out process.
We attempt to properly fill each order and ship as soon as possible. Orders in stock generally ship within one business day of receipt. Any orders placed on during a weekend or holiday will ship the next business day. Your credit card is not charged until your order ships.
Standard ground shipments take 4-10 business days to arrive. Back orders are shipped separately when they arrive in our warehouse and do not incur further shipping charges. Shipping outside the continental US, specialty shipping and shipping on custom and oversized items generally takes longer to ship.
Certain items may ship separately directly from suppliers; therefore, your order may ship from multiple locations. Should this occur, you will receive an email confirmation and tracking number for each shipment. For USPS Priority Mail, tracking is not always reliable. Shipments from suppliers may take longer to ship but we note this information on the appropriate product pages.
An email is sent to purchaser each time an order or partial order is shipped. Delivery date estimates are given as good faith estimates only. Any and all products purchased on organicbug.com are shipped and delivered by independent carriers not affiliated with Organic Bug. Title to products purchased on organicbug.com, and the risk of loss for merchandise passes on to purchaser when the carrier takes possession of these items.

Specialty Shipping
Special shipping conditions may be necessary for the delivery of certain oversized items, perishables or merchandise shipped directly from a supplier. If special delivery, or longer than normal delivery applies to an item, detailed information is clearly noted on the product description page and is again noted during check-out.
Inside Delivery is automatically added for extra-heavy furniture and select other products in the US. We contract with a dependable independent carrier to handle your delivery. The carrier contacts you by phone to arrange a delivery window. The item is then delivered and brought into your home or office, unpacked, inspected, placed, and all packaging is taken and disposed of offsite by the carrier. We ship worldwide through the US Postal Service (shipments sent via US Postal Service can take much longer to reach their destination and tracking is not always reliable) or International UPS. If we cannot ship an item worldwide, it is clearly noted on the product description page. Any import fees, taxes, duty or customs imposed on international shipments are the sole responsibility of the recipient. Questions you may have pertaining to these charges should be directed to your local government import office.

Damaged or defective items, merchandise sent in error, and all other merchandise must be returned in complete original manufacturer's packaging, same condition as sold, with any accessories, literature, instructions, documentation, and attached tags.
- If you are dissatisfied with the performance of an item, you may return it for exchange or refund up to 90 days from date of purchase. Poor performance or damage due to misuse or wear & tear will not be credited or replaced.
Please securly repack the merchandise you are returning. Consumables including but not limited to food, personal care products, and CDs/DVDs that have been opened or used cannot be returned. Special Orders and Final Sales cannot be returned.
Please see the following policies applicable on returns:
- All returns must have a Return Merchandise Authorization Number so they may be returned to the proper address and correctly identified for credit to your account. Please do not attempt to return merchandise prior to receiving a Return Merchandise Authorization Number.
- Returns are refunded in the original tender.
- Organic Bug waives all Shipping & Handling fees for exchanges. To receive an exchange sooner, please contact Customer Service toll free within the US at 888.428.7050 M-F 9am-5pm EST. If you are calling from outside the US, please contact us at 386.428.7050. We will issue a Return Merchandise Authorization Number per our Return Instructions. We will then charge your credit card for the (In Stock) replacement item and ship it to you immediately. Upon our receipt of the exchange item, we will issue a credit accordingly.
- Gift returns, including Gift Registry returns, are exchanged or refunded for the value indicated on the order in the form of a store credit, valid for one year.
- SPECIAL ORDERS and FINAL SALES are not returnable for credit or refund. Special Order and Final Sale items are clearly noted on the product description page. Special Orders are not cancelable and customers are required to sign (click in agreement) a Special Order Waiver specifying their understanding and agreement with these terms.
Easy Return Instructions
- Contact us via email at customerservice@organicbug.com to obtain the required Return Merchandise Authorization Number or contact Customer Service toll free within the US at 888.428.7050 M-F 9am-5pm EST. If you call from outside the US, please contact us at 386.428.7050.
- Write the Return Merchandise Authorization Number we provide on the securely packed return shipping box.
- Arrange to ship via a shipping method of your choice. We recommend insuring the return for the retail value.
- When the item is received by us or by the supplier from whom it was originally shipped, a credit (less original shipping charges) is issued on the same credit card used for the purchase of the item. If you are exchanging a damaged or defective item, when it is received by us or by the supplier from whom it was originally shipped, another (In Stock) item of the same description is shipped to you without any further charges. Should you choose to return the damaged or defective item for credit, when it is received a credit (including shipping charges) is issued on the same credit card used for purchase of the item.
If you are returning an item sent in error, we apologize for any inconvenience! Please email or call according to the Easy Return Instructions above to obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization Number. Repack the item in its original condition and packaging. When it is received by us or by the supplier from whom it was originally shipped, a credit (including shipping charges) is issued on your credit card. Please allow one credit card billing cycle for any credit to appear on your statement.
If any of the above conditions are not met, Organic Bug reserves the right to refuse the return or charge a restocking fee of not less than 15% at our sole discretion.
